Automatic insulating oil dielectric strength tester is also known as oil breakdown voltage tester or oil BDV tester.
Breakdown voltage is measured by observing at what voltage, sparking string between two electrode immersed in oil, separated by specific gap. Low value of BV indicates presence of moisture content and conducting substances in the oil.
First, a sample of transformer oil is taken for testing. The device applies an electric field into the oil. The amount of current in the oil is measured. The point where the current increases rapidly is detected and the data obtained evaluates the insulation properties of the oil.
